On Sunday 22nd September 2019, Team S&J took part in the Sheffield 10k Corporate Challenge to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield. Members of staff from Spear & Jackson UK, Eclipse Magnetics, and S&J Corporate office made up the team, as part of the Spear & Jackson Group of companies.

The eight employees began the race at the starting point on Arundel Gate in torrential rain, but didn’t let it dampen their spirits or enthusiasm! The route took them through the city centre along Charter Row, and up Ecclesall Road, before skirting the edges of Endcliffe park, and back for a city

The team raised an impressive total of over £1,700 all for St Luke’s Hospice, who provides specialist palliative care services in Sheffield. As a charity, all of St Luke’s services are free to the public, but as just 25% of its funding comes from the NHS, St Luke’s have to raise more than £10 million every year.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the fundraising either directly through donations, making or eating cake at our bake sale, or cheering the runners on on the day. If you would like to make a donation, our Just Giving page is still live!

In August 2019 ETNA is celebrating ten years in business and as we reach this milestone, we want to thank everyone who has been a part of our success.

It all started in the Summer of 2009 with the long-term goal of giving North American customers real time service and in-territory factory support as part of the Eclipse family.  The core team of Chuck and Lorrie Whipps, previously of the UK’s North American agent, W.W. Sales, and Mark Ward, the recently emigrated Eclipse Magnetics Sales Manager for USA and Canada, along with Jerry the warehouse guy and Gloria as a part time assistant were the first employees.  Chuck, Lorrie and Mark are still here to this day allowing long term customer relationships to be developed and maintained.

As we continually worked hard to impress potential clients across North America and meet the demands of the manufacturing industry, our business grew quickly.

We’re so proud that our company has grown at such a rate, and that we count on local, regional, and national businesses among our client base, including small, medium and large-scale enterprises. We are still based in Stoney Creek, Ontario, our team has trebled and our sales have increased dramatically year on year.

But what hasn’t changed in our business ethos – it was always to be the best and not the biggest and that still stands today.

Throughout the years we’ve developed territory specific products, programmes and services that have come to define our business and reputation.

We don’t know what the next ten years will bring, but we can promise the same level of commitment and service for our clients.

Many thanks to the incredible team at ETNA and an industry that has been so supportive from the start. We are excited to see what is in store for us in the next ten years.

The Ultrafiltrex pipeline separator was showcased at the Energy Exports Conference 2019 in Aberdeen in June. As a major event aimed at supporting the UK supply chain to export products, services and expertise into global markets, it really was the ideal platform to show off Eclipse Magnetics’ high performance solution to pipeline corrosion to visitors, exhibitors, and thought leaders in the oil and gas industry.

Tony Joynston, Global Sales Manager for Eclipse Magnetics Ultrafiltrex Separator said: “The Energy Exports Conference was an excellent opportunity to meet and listen to senior decision makers from international oil companies. It was also a really well organised exhibition and conference with insightful discussions on topics currently affecting the oil and gas export market.

As far as exhibitions are concerned, the footfall of visitors was very good, especially considering it was the first year that the event was held. We’ll definitely attend again next year, which I anticipate will be a much bigger event now that the success of the first has become apparent. We also got some good quality leads across Europe and the Middle East from the event!”

Eclipse Magnetics has successfully re-magnetised the ignition magneto for an Mk XIX Spitfire which is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Over the life of the magneto, the magnetism was suspected to have been depleted, and therefore needed to be re-magnetised during an overhaul.

Using its own specially developed re-magnetising and measuring equipment to measure the initial strength of the magneto’s magnet and its polarity, Eclipse Magnetics was able to re-magnetise the alnico magnet with the same polarity, and the resultant magnet strength was measured. A detailed performance report showing all measurements and figures from before and after the process was also generated. The process was successful, and Eclipse Magnetics was able to increase the magnetic outputin both units to very similar levels.

Dr Ewan Goodier CEng BEng Hons MIEEE MIET, Technical Sales Manager at Eclipse Magnetics Limited said: “We were very pleased to be a part of the overhaul on the Griffon engine magneto. Although we cannot guarantee that the magnet will be back to its brand new 100% value, we do know that it is significantly better than it was and will certainly generate a higher electromotive force.”

Wg Cdr Andy March MSc BSc(Hons) CEng FRAeS Finst LM RAF, the Assistant Type Airworthiness Authority for the BBMF aircraft, said: “The Ignition Magneto is classed as a Critical Engine Component and as such it is vitally important that it performs reliably and as it was originally designed to do.

On 16th August over 50 employees from across the Spear and Jackson Group travelled from all over the UK to take part in the S&J Group summer charity fundraiser, a charity football match in aid of Cancer Research UK. Held at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park, it was a fantastic match and resulted in a win for Real ETG, 5 -4, with Athletico Tools already wanting a rematch arranged!

Refereed by Ex-Premier league official, Eclipse Magnetics’ very own Rob Pashley, goals were scored for Real ETG by Daniel French, James Bessey, Ryan Telling, Andy Reeve and Craig Chambers, and for Athletico Tools by Corey Douglas, Barry Chan, Gary Windle and Billy Bartles.

The fundraising total currently stands at £3700. Thanks to players, supporters, organisers and our Chairman Simon for his support.

We are very excited to announce that our domestic BoilerMag heating system filter has recently been featured in 2 national newspapers in the UK! We enjoyed an article titled ‘Boiler efficiency maximised with a magnet’ in The Guardian newspaper on Saturday 25th May, and a half page article on the energy saving benefits of boiler filters for homeowners in the ‘My Home, My Garden’ supplement which was distributed in the 2nd June issue of the Mail on Sunday.

Sales & Marketing Director for BoilerMag, Steve McAllorum said: “Although the BoilerMag products are regularly featured in a variety of industry related magazines including; Heating and Plumbing Monthly, Registered Gas Engineer, PHAM News, and many more, it’s a really great opportunity for us to be featured in national newspapers.

Homeowners have never been keener to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, therefore awareness is beginning to increase regarding the benefits of boiler filters. They’re a great way of preventing the build-up of magnetite or black sludge in domestic heating systems, keeping them working at their full potential. In turn, homeowners benefit from lower energy bills, a reduction in maintenance and call outs for repairs, and increased boiler life.”

The highly anticipated ceremony, hosted by critically acclaimed comedian Shappi Khorsandi and household favourite Alan Dedicoat, saw 20 accolades presented to the leading manufacturers/suppliers and retailers that were deemed to be award-worthy by the panel of expert judges.
